Sun Farming…
I don’t claim to be an environmentalist, nor have I read Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan. But I let common sense guide my choices and decisions in most everything I do. I’ve always had a suspicion that if we don’t treat everything with respect and appreciate what Mother Nature offers us, there will be consequences to be reckoned with. In this era of BSE outbreak, H5N1 and H1N1 viruses, and numerous salmonella scares which are making headlines time after time, my curiosity drives me to pay more attention to food producers who are not only making a living, but a difference as well.
This weekend, I attended a walk-and-talk tour at Marin Sun Farms in Point Reyes, CA, specifically the Historic H Ranch in Inverness which is managed by David Evans. Evans, a fifth-generation farmer and current owner of MSF, has been working over a decade fostering interest in 100% grass-fed and pasture raised livestock. Cattle and chickens are spotted across the hills, free to roam around and graze at their leisure. According to Evans, their Hereford and Angus cows are never confined. No artificial fertilizers or chemical pesticides are used on the pasture, and the animals are hormone- and antibiotic-free.

Perhaps my mere passion for gastronomy will not change much about the world, but a little awareness and change in practices could go a long way over the long run.

So, what’s for dinner?
